Tales from the Thai Restaurant: Spicy Coming in, Pain Going Out

When people think of Thai food, some people think spicy. This is true for some dishes, as a favorite addition is the Thai chili pepper. Personally, I don't eat them whole. My family likes to add them in big quantities all the time, so overtime I adapted to the spicy scorch of the chili.

At the restaurant, you get to choose how spicy you want your meals. Usually, I guide the first timers to the restaurant. I let them know that this level is average (like hot wings) and that level is truly hot (sweating, need for cold drinks) and what not. I am their saving grace from the hell that is eating too spicy food.

Once in a while, you get the douchebag know-it-alls. I absolutely hate customers like this. The "Oh I went to Thailand on vacation once for three days like eight years ago" customer or the "you're not real Thai food so I'm not worried" customer.

I'm not a mean person, but when you talk over me or try to tell me you know what your doing, then... go ahead :).

Me: "So on this meal you ordered, you can... (me trying to explain the spice system)"
Rude person: *Interrupts me* "I want the hottest level. If its not hot, I want a refund. Tell them to make it right."
Me: *smiles innocently* "Sure thing!" *secretly laughs to myself cause they just ordered a digestive cleanse*
They pay, I send the ticket to the kitchen, the food is made, and I serve the food.

Now in a few cases, I've had people who absolutely loved the high spice levels. They were heels over head for it. But the other cases, with the arrogant ones, they try to complain, whine, and cry about how the food is too hot. "I want a refund" or "Remake this so it's not spicy". WELL TOO BAD. We have a policy where those who willingly get the higher levels can not have their food remade. You chose that spice, you eat that spice.

So when they stroll up trying to get my boss to fix it, you already know I'm waiting at the counter like...

Surprise motherfucker.
